Unobstructed floor-to-ceiling beach views with custom drum pendants.April 2019

Sun-drenched Fort Myers Beach, FL, is home to the beautiful DiamondHead Beach Resort, noted for its suite accommodations and dining options.  Recently, the resort opened Cōste Island Cuisine, a beachfront restaurant featuring panoramic views of the Gulf of Mexico.

Cōste was professionally designed featuring a 360-degree quartz bar and floor-to-ceiling windows, covering a total dining and bar square footage of 3,285. Inhabiting the former Chloe’s restaurant space, three room units were taken out, while the bar/lounge was relocated,  to take advantage of the water view.  The previous space was completely gutted and completed with new finishes, flooring, ceiling, tables, seating and lighting to complement the tropical feel and ensure the breathtaking view is unobstructed.

Project Architect Brooks R. Swanson of design schemes of florida, llc, worked with Ron Gruninger of West Coast Lighting Agency, to select the luminaires that would serve the design focus.   Custom Lumetta drums made for an obvious choice.  Various drum sizes ranging from 6’ to 8’ in diameter were strategically spread throughout the restaurant without blocking the panoramic views.   “The challenge was that the ceiling heights we had to work with were only 9’-2” high, so the depth of these large Lumetta drums were sized to fit the space seamlessly,” shares Brooks.

Seen on the installation are various custom drum pendants: P59617 in 96” OD x 9” H and 4” stem,  P57217– 72” OD x 9”H and 30” stem, both with Wood Grain Lumenate®,  P58417 in 84” OD x 9”H and 30” stem, with Slate Lumenate®. All luminaires have top and bottom lenses,  canopies matching frame, F3 Black powder coat finish, with dimmable LED lamping.

Inspiration Lighting: 6 Wall Sconces that Make a Stylish StatementApril 2019

Increasingly, fresh, avant-garde designs that make lighting serve as wall art are regularly introduced to the market.

If your space needs more lighting inspiration, contemporary wall sconces often help to define a style.  Lumetta’s wall luminaires have always met the challenge of delivering the right balance of artful intention while ensuring that the piece can complement a specifier’s overall vision.

Here are 6 sconces* to help you make a stylish statement:

#1 Zen: A poised and well-balanced design that works in harmony with its surrounding.

#2 Square & Shadow: Square sconces break away from traditional shapes for a modern take. Shadow sconces play on double layers for subdued elegance and casting of softer light.

#3 Arcs & Form: Complement fluid, easygoing themes. Arcs incorporate handcrafted metal frames. Forms come in curved, cylindrical and other organic shapes.

#4 Echo: These ultramodern outcomes of combining geometry + pattern + light transform surfaces from flat to impressive.

#5 Silhouette: A contemporary line of impeccably designed, laser-cut LED sconces, these make a sophisticated statement with its form and vividly soft light projection.

#6 Studio: Handcrafted sconces that pair modern design with attractive patterns, creating highlight pieces.

Vibrant Communal Spaces: SNHU Windsor & Hampton HallMarch 2019

After successfully transforming Southern New Hampshire University’s (SNHU) decommissioned library into a vibrant student center, Analogue Studio was tapped to revitalize the outdated residence hall of Windsor & Hampton.  Originally designed to promote community by combining compact residential suites with shared lounge spaces, they were shunned by students in favor of their bedrooms.  This undermined any sense of community.  Poor  lighting, drab finishes, and uncomfortable furniture had to go.

Analogue Studios’  Design Team composed of Brian Amaral, Matthew Morse, Vince Pan, and Stephanie Collins set to renovate these drab common spaces.  Utilizing the right mix of inviting furniture, vibrant finishes, residential accessories, warm flooring, and stylish LED lighting, the spaces transformed into a communal living room.  In the Game Room shared by the entire building, they appointed a combination of Lumetta’s 48” streamline and 32” L2 pendants. Opting for simplicity, the streamline was chosen in shade D148 Mist from the Lumenate® Weave series. The L2 taper sports D148 Mist on the outer shade with D57 Apple inner shade from the Lumenate® Fresh series.

A Cluster of L2 Acoustic for Isted Technical Sales’ Conference Room.March 2019

When Isted Technical Sales (Canada) relocated its Regina offices, they saw the move as an opportunity to display their own imagination in lighting design.  Why not turn the offices into a living  showroom of fixtures from some of the manufacturers they represent?  There was the conference room, an important space where team members gather for ideation and updates.  With its high ceiling, it could use luminaires that would make the room stand out; displaying “something” not seen every day.

In Lumetta’s L2 Acoustic, they found an embodiment of aesthetic and function; but one fixture was not going to achieve their vision. Going for originality, they assigned a cluster of drum pendants in different diameters– 18”, 23”, 34”, 42” and 48” OD—in the same 14” height.  While these  all sport a D52MM Silver outer diffuser from the Lumenate® Metallic collection, a mix of energetic Acoustic shades were chosen for the interior.  The cluster balances the high ceiling, as well as  draws the eye to a central point—the table where ideas of innovation and controls typically surface.  Further, the sound dampening attribute of the acoustic helps moderate the positive animation that mark these meetings.

Echo Luminaire “Clouds” Contribute to Refined Whimsy for Children’s Health Pediatric ICUFebruary 2019

A Pediatric ICU stay can be a traumatic experience for the family. The nature of the care itself is also extra stressful for staff members.  These are facts completely understood by the design team of Perkins + Will Dallas, going into ideation over the most suitable design for the unit at Children’s Health.  Led by Interior Designer Whitney Hendricksonthe design goal was to create a supportive environment for patients, families, and staff by executing an “Africa: Savanna and Jungle” theme,  to tie in with the hospital’s signature style of refined whimsy.

As most children are not able to get out of bed and wander about during their stay, with some even spending weeks staring at the ceiling above their beds,  the idea of creating impact on the upper wall and ceilings of the nurses’ station became the design focus.  Overall, the savanna and jungle are expressed on the walls with bold, earth-toned illustration, with Echo ceiling luminaires as “clouds”.

A combination of the Echo 23” x 14” drums in Abstract pattern,  33” x 14” drums in Shell pattern, and 44” x 15” drums in Tech pattern, customized as surface mounts, provided the whimsical clouds for the scenery.  Per Whitney:  “The Echo’s various patterns and sizes helped the luminaire clouds refract light on the surrounding sky, especially at night when half of the corridor lights dim. The intent for cloud fixtures to glow as a feature element to be enjoyed by the beholder, was flawlessly attained.”

New Echo Wall Sconces: Geometry + Pattern = Eye-catchingJanuary 2019

Geometry + Pattern?  While others are still debating the equation, we have already translated into design.  Introducing the Echo Wall Sconces, the latest addition to the popular Echo Collection.

The Echo Wall Sconces embody visual artistry through shape and pattern. Eye-catching luminaires in Lunar, Slice, and Slope, inspired by geometric art, matched with Echo’s proprietary Shell, Abstract, and Tech patterns.  These sconces transform any surface from flat to impressive.

The sconces come in two versions, appealing to the purist and to the design maverick.  There’s “Unbound”, creating visual impact through the sheer effect of a precise shape, color, and pattern combination, and the “Cradled” version, which includes a metal cradle crafted to underscore an ultramodern feel. Echo sconces are available in various shapes and can be customized with or without your choice of cradle design upon request. The cradle comes with metal finish options exclusive to the Echo sconce.

“These wall sconces are anything but ordinary.  In aiming to develop a unique design that captures the essence of the Echo pendants and yet delivers on its own, we really pushed the envelope in re-imagining most everyone’s expectations of what a wall sconce is,” shares Bowen Wheatley, Lumetta’s Design Team lead.

The Echo Wall sconces are available in 6 Echo colors of Kiwi, Grey, Gold, Mystic, Onyx, and Navy.

St. Bernard Library: Using Custom Graphics to Highlight and InspireJanuary 2019

At the children’s play and lounge areas of the St. Bernard branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton county, hang 28” drum pendants with words that amuse and inspire.  Champlin Architecture’s Christine Madden worked closely with the library team in executing the design details for a welcoming, whimsical, and curious environment for children’s exploration.  Together, they came up with the use of custom graphics as a highlight communication piece.

“The director, herself, thought it would be playful to use words that are customarily associated with libraries as well as those that depict a love of books,” recalls Christine. Words like “shhh”, “love books”, “time”, among others. Where these words will be placed is just as important.  The appropriate design needed to encourage the children even as they may lie on the floor and look up, as the two-story building has a tall ceiling.  Complementing the height is the abundance of floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The answer:  display them on unobtrusive yet eye catching luminaire pendants.  This is where Lumetta’s custom capabilities fit perfectly.  Lumetta produced multiple Lite drum pendants  modified in height: 12” D x 28” H,  with white acrylic top and etched white bottom lenses, carrying custom printed graphics. These luminaires were staggered in plan and elevation to fill the volume of the light-filled spaces.  “At night, the custom pendants appear as beacon-like lanterns as viewed from the street. As such, children’s curiosity is captured while providing a sense of levity for the adults.”

Akron Children’s Hospital Considine Building Creates Positive DistractionsNovember 2018

Hasenstab Architects recently designed an addition to the Considine Professional Building at Akron Children’s Hospital, making use of Lumetta’s Shadow drum fixtures and Double Bar pendants.

In conceiving the design of the space, Hasenstab Interior Designer Carla Cremers considered the promotion of a feeling of enhanced well-being by decreasing stress and creating positive distractions.  “Due to the Shadow drum and Double Bar pendants’ modification capabilities in terms of sizing and inner diffuser options, they were easy selections”, she notes.

The lighting modifications introduced enabled Hasenstab to achieve design continuity with other fixtures in the space. Carla underscores that: “Clear wayfinding is key in decreasing stress. This was also attained by emphasizing floor color themes with the vibrantly matching Lumenate® inner shades and coordinating TransLumenate® shades, for the Shadow drums”.

The Shadow drums are surface mounted at 48” OD x 15” H, using D921 Trans Cool TransLumenate® for the outer shade and D57 Apple Lumenate® (Fresh) for the inner shade. The same inner and outer shades were used for the 3-Tier custom Drum pendant measuring 28” OH x 28” OW, located at the Mahoning Valley location. Double Bar pendants PB660 feature D35 Grid Chalk Lumenate® under the Whimsy family with an F8 steel finish.

Achieving Visual Symmetry: Patton School of Education, Ohio UniversityNovember 2018

When Champlin Architecture was tasked with the complete renovation and expansion of the Patton School of Education’s McCracken Hall, they reimagined the College with a dynamic space layout and architectural expression. The design goal was to accentuate the ceiling height and volume in key spaces. In terms of lighting design, this meant achieving visual symmetry with larger lighting of a simple, bright color, displaying diagonal design attribute. How did these considerations come into play with Lumetta’s telescopes?

Champlin’s Michelle VonderBrink, Interior Design Associate, explains: “A cluster of these pendants hanging at various heights provided the look of larger lighting without distracting from the design elements in the space around and below them. To coordinate and highlight some existing features of the space, such as original wood ceiling, brick wall, the bold, darker paint colors implemented throughout the design, we kept the color of the lights simple and bright. Diagonal design elements were incorporated into the plan to draw the eye through main spaces. Lumetta’s telescope carried these desirables and coordinated well with the overall design idea.”

To integrate the lighting for the ceiling and walls, custom sconces in the telescope design were commissioned. “It was great to be able to create something unique for our client and project and also very cool to see it become a standard product!”, Michelle enthuses.

Both the pendant and the sconces utilized D61 MT White shade from the Lumenate® Fiber collection. Each P600 23” telescope measured 6” OD x 23” H, with F2 powder chrome finish and featured LED lamping. The sconce dimensions are ADA compliant at 8” W x 4”D x 24”H.

Lumenate® and TransLumenate®: Verified Anti-MicrobialOctober 2018

In testing against the ASTM E2180 standard, Lumenate® and TransLumenate® were verified to protect against the bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, at the highest level. This was revealed in a test conducted by a global, independent quality assurance lab. The test result lends the necessary support to Lumetta’s anti-microbial claim for its proprietary shade material.

What this means: Further assurance that our luminaires are highly suitable for installation in venues that benefit from higher sanitation practices and anti-microbial products, such as clinics, hospitals, restaurants, hotels, community living, long term care facilities, school cafeterias and lobbies, among others.

To signify this assurance, Lumetta has affixed an anti-microbial symbol composed of a shield and a check mark, with the words: ‘Antimicrobial Verified’, in all applicable materials.

Lumenate® is a flexible, lightweight, versatile, washable composite material, created and used exclusively by Lumetta for its luminaires. TransLumenate® is the transparent version of Lumenate® designed for, but not exclusive, to the outer layer of our Shadow Luminaires.

Lumetta Releases ‘Fall Inspiration’ Social Media SeriesOctober 2018

Fall is awash with both muted and vibrant colors. Brilliant bolds. Earth tones. Teal. Sienna. Orange.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful sights and mood of fall, Lumetta published a series of posts that show how this beauty can be translated with its luminaires. By selecting from the the full range of Lumenate® colors, patterns, transparency, and finishes, any Lumetta fixture can represent both the warm and cool textures of autumn. The option of tunable white LED lighting, which enable adjustment of color temperature and intensity, adds to even more possibilities

Visual suggestions centered on going for brilliant bolds by mixing and matching rich tones, subtle patterns, or introducing pops of bold color to create a signature look; tailored elegance through setting the mood by fusing subtle pops of rich, warm tones and sleek-framed luminaires; and harmonious combinations influenced by a pleasant array of patterns, colors and textures.

The series ran for about 3 weeks on different platforms and was well received by the interior and lighting design communities. “It was very encouraging to know how positively the theme was received,” was the unanimous comment of Steph Carlson and Andrea Constantino, the highly imaginative Art & Production team who conceptualized the series. “As a result, we are already working on a follow up for the next season,” adds Steph.
